Vocational Training

Vocational education programs have made a real difference in the lives of countless young people nationwide; they build self-confidence and leadership skills by allowing students to utilize their unique gifts and talents.- Conrad Burns quotes

"Give them fish and you feed them for a day, give them education and you feed them for a lifetime" goes a famous saying. The importance of education could not have been emphasized better. Drawing inspiration from this, the Change Foundation is an effort taken by a socially responsible citizen to educate the rural students of Tamil Nadu.

The percentage of students illiterate in India stands at a startling figure of 40%. The percentage of students who reach high school is even more alarming at 15%. The reason for the lack of education especially in the rural areas is mainly due to financial hurdles. In most of the rural areas, children are sent to work for daily wages and contribute to the family’s meager income. Political will in the country to educate the rural students is also not very commendable.

It is for this reason that we as conscious human beings and concerned citizens next must contribute our bit to improving the life of tomorrow’s India. By educating rural children, we are not only securing their future by making them self reliant, we are also protecting them from various fraudulent motives and malpractices which take advantage of uneducated people. As is well known, real India is rural India. These educated rural students will be able to make more informed choices whether in the electorate or in their personal life setting the stage for a brighter future of the country.

Vocational training coupled with Non-Formal Education is provided to those children above 14 years of age, who show too much resistance towards formal education. This is because many children from poor families find earning money as a better alternative compared to going to schools. Therefore we try to provide them with this option at least to help them lead a better and more responsible life. The vocational training includes carpentry, two-wheeler mechanism, tailoring, arts & crafts, painting, etc. However, in the process whenever we discover that a child has developed interest in formal education, we help him to make a switch.

Your active participation for the above could be in following ways:

  • Be a tutor for any of the vocational skills.
  • Refer needy children who might want to pursue employment due to family conditions.
  • Donate Used/unused articles related to the skills mentioned for providing training
  • Conduct workshops to test the level of learning
  • Provide career counseling to trained students for further job opportunities
